Mariah’s Story

Faith Works!: Tell me about yourself.

Mariah: My name is Mariah and I am 22 years old. I currently live in San Marcos, TX where I attend Texas State University as a Political Science Major. I graduate May 2016.

Awesome! What are your plans upon graduation?

I will be returning back to school in the fall to pursue a second degree in nursing. I will have my baby by then so I will be raising my little munchkin as well.

Congratulations! Do you know if you are having a girl or boy yet?

Thank you! No. I am only 10 weeks so its too soon to tell. I do not care either way but I am excited to know so I can start shopping! My boyfriend wants a boy so bad though.

Oh my goodness! It seems like every father wants a son. I pray that you have a healthy pregnancy. If you don’t mind sharing, can you give a little insight of your circumstances of being admitted into the foster care system?

The short story is that my mom suffers from mental illness and she gave up on life, as well as on me and my brothers. She left me at the shelter for teens when I was 14 years old, and within a couple of weeks I was in foster care.

How was your experience with Faith Works!?

I was with 3 agencies while I was in care and I can honestly say that Faith Works! is the only agency that I knew or met people besides the agency assigned caseworker. It was really like a family set up because we knew everybody that worked at the agency. We knew all the kids and parents as well because we did so many activities together like camps, monthly meetings, and fun outings, to name a few. It was not just a business because everyone in the agency took the time to engage with the kids and do their part to help us out. I think that really made the agency stand out and it provided a wider support system for me outside of the home and my case worker; which I think was very important looking back.
